Strengthening Latino Health: 2019 Latino Health and Health Disparities Conference ~ Fortaleciendo La Salud Latina: Conferencia de Salud Latina 2019
Program Overview
Latinos are the nation's largest racial/ethnic minority group. New York State is one of the top 10 states with the largest Hispanic/Latino population. (https://minorityhealth.hhs.gov/omh/browse.aspx?lvl=3&lvlid=64) According to the census, 17.8% of the population of Rochester and 8.8% of the population of Monroe County is Latino or Hispanic. (https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/rochestercitynewyork) Like other racial/ethnic minorities and underserved populations, Latinos experience significant educational, economic, environmental, social and physical health risks coupled with significant health care access issues. (HHS.gov, 2019) In addition, language and cultural barriers can impact healthcare and therefore, are critical to understand and address. This conference will bring together individuals committed to addressing health disparities that impact Latino communities. The conference will offer an opportunity for researchers, practitioners and advocates to share emerging research, best practices and community perspectives that shape the agenda for Latino health and eliminating disparities.
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:
1. Demonstrate understanding of cultural perspectives that may impact patient care and research in Latino communities
2. Describe personal goals to improve their teaching, patient care and research relative to diverse Latino populations
3. Recognize current research and best practices that help improve Latino health disparities
4. Identify how Latino physicians and health professionals can create a positive impact to address gaps and barriers in Latino health
