NYS Association of Occupational Health Nurses

Celebrate OHN Week - April 15 - 19

Posted over 6 years ago by Patricia Sadowski

OHN Week is a national observance to recognize and celebrate YOU as members of the occupational and environmental health nursing profession who promote and protect the health, safety and well-being of workers in the United States and around the globe.  This year Occupational Health Nurses Week is April 15 - 19.

While most understand the function of a nurse, not everyone is aware of all the additional responsibilities that fall on the occupational and environmental health nurse's plate.  From case management to health counseling to the oversight of legal and regulatory compliance, OHNs help to improve employees' health and a business' bottom line.

OHNs implement "worker population health management programs" that drive workers' health, engagement and productivity.  Their commitment to creating a culture of health and safety every day drives business success and demonstrates corporate responsibility.

Without OHNs, a business' bottom line may suffer.  Businesses count on OHNs to protect their workers' health which in turn helps to reduce absenteeism, lower turnover rates, improve employee morale, increase productivity and create a positive brand image.

OHNs are recognized leaders in workplace health and safety.  Their prominent position allows them to perform the following actions:

  • Collaborate with employees to develop model behaviors of good health
  • Set expectations for employees to self-manage their physical, mental and emotional health
  • Leverage health promotion and disease management programs and services to increase employee accountability for health
  • Serve as health advocates and experts to internal and external groups
  • Provide expert and efficient management of occupational and non-occupational injuiry/illness leading to reduced time from work and cost savings
  • Create a culture of health and safety to ensure a supportive environment where everyone can do their best work
