Pledge to End Nurse Abuse Today

Posted almost 6 years ago by Patricia Sadowski

1 in 4 nurses has been assaulted at work. That's not OK.

“I’ve been punched in the face, bitten, slapped, kicked, spit on, cussed at, groped, slammed against a wall, pinched, kneed in my stomach, headbutted, sexually assaulted…all while trying to take care of another human being.”

Did you know that the likelihood of health care workers being exposed to violence is higher than prison guards or police officers?

Disturbing and alarming incidents have put a spotlight on an alarming truth: physical and verbal abuse against nurses is a serious problem in healthcare settings across the country.

We can and must protect nurses. Just like patient safety, our safety is a critical component to ensure quality and safe care. The American Nurses Association wants you to STAND UP FOR US and pledge to:

SUPPORT zero tolerance policies for violence against nurses.

REPORT abuse against nurses whenever I safely can.

SHARE this pledge with your friends and family to sign.

We need your help to end nurse abuse! Take the pledge today and share with every nurse you know.

When nurses speak, Washington listens - and nursing has the numbers to turn heads when we speak as one. Please accept this reminder to take the action listed below (and forgive us if you are one of the thousands of nurses who already acted on our request).

Please take the pledge to End Nurse Abuse today. We need to show our numbers, so nurses will be listened to. Already, 21,000 concerned nurses and patients have signed the ANA End Nurse Abuse pledge - now we need you to sign it. Our goal is to get to 50,000 strong by the end of 2019. You can sign the pledge here or text PLEDGE to 52886.

By taking these simple steps, we tell the world that change needs to happen to ensure the most trusted profession has the safe working environment it deserves.

Thank you for your support!

Sincerely,

Debbie Hatmaker, PhD, RN, FAAN
ANA Chief Nursing Officer/EVP
